The Challenges Currently Facing the DACA Program

The United States has been undergoing various changes after a new president came to power in 2017. This is because some legislators, including the Attorney General, for Texas, have written to the president asking him to rescind the DACA program.

These individuals are required to reapply every two years, and are equipped with a social security number, and driving license. With these, they can then access the better education and job to better their lives. What these legislators, comprising of nine attorney generals and one governor, are advocating for, will see the slow phasing out of the program. This is to be done by the refusal to accept new applications and the discontinuation of the renewal programs. In the letter from General Ken Paxton, if their demands are not met, they are threatening to take legal action. This may lead to the deportation of about 800,000 individuals who live work and study in the United States.

Various organizations and groups have come up to oppose this move and one of them in the Frontera fund. This fund was established in 2013, with the settlement money Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were awarded. This was due to the unlawful arrest and detainment of the journalists, in 2007, after they exposed the then Arizona Sherrif Joe Arpaio in their newspaper Phoenix News Times.

Arpaio’s efforts were ultimately useless because Larkin and Lacey were released by the end of the day. The journalists sued the county and ended up winning nearly four million dollars.


Arpaio’s crimes don’t stop at unlawful arrest. He was charged with criminal contempt of court in 2017, but was pardoned shortly after by political ally President Trump.
