The Challenges Currently Facing the DACA Program

The United States has been undergoing various changes after a new president came to power in 2017. One of the things he mentioned when he was campaigning, was his plan to keep Mexican immigrants out of the US. Currently, however, even the future of young immigrants in the county is also uncertain. This is because some legislators, including the Attorney General, for Texas, have written to the president asking him to rescind the DACA program.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program settles and provide learning and employment opportunities for young immigrants, who meet specific requirements. These individuals are required to reapply every two years, and are equipped with a social security number, and driving license. With these, they can then access the better education and job to better their lives. According to studies carried out in the country, the various people who have been enrolled under the DACA program contribute millions of dollars to the economy of the country.

What these legislators, comprising of nine attorney generals and one governor, are advocating for, will see the slow phasing out of the program. This is to be done by the refusal to accept new applications and the discontinuation of the renewal programs. In the letter from General Ken Paxton, if their demands are not met, they are threatening to take legal action. This may lead to the deportation of about 800,000 individuals who live work and study in the United States.

Various organizations and groups have come up to oppose this move and one of them in the Frontera fund. This fund was established in 2013, with the settlement money Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were awarded. This was due to the unlawful arrest and detainment of the journalists, in 2007, after they exposed the then Arizona Sherrif Joe Arpaio in their newspaper Phoenix News Times.

The Frontera Fund works with organizations and groups that advocate for human rights, especially those fighting for immigrants. Currently, they support about thirty groups, both in the United States and along the Mexican border. They do this by offering funding, information, and assistance.

Michael Lacy and Jim Larkin Raise Money for Hispanics in Arizona

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to create The Frontera Fund to help a group of people who were victimized by the same person as they were. Joe Arpaio, former sheriff, was sued by a Mexican immigrant and Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin for illegal arrests. Now with the Frontera Fund, the Hispanic community in Arizona has someone to assist them against people like Joe Arpaio.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were doing their job at The Phoenix New Times when Arpaio sent his deputies to arrest them for something they published in their paper. Arpaio’s efforts were ultimately useless because Larkin and Lacey were released by the end of the day. The journalists sued the county and ended up winning nearly four million dollars.

Arpaio’s crimes don’t stop at unlawful arrest. He was charged with criminal contempt of court in 2017, but was pardoned shortly after by political ally President Trump.

The Frontera Fund isn’t the only toy Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey will be using to combat the corruption and damage caused by politicians such as Joe Arpaio. Together, the two have once again created a newspaper. Front Page Confidential is more of a public service than a normal newspaper. By using their new paper, Lacey and Larkin intend to inform citizens of instances of political corruption and constitutional violations.
